How is artificial intelligence (AI) already changing society, and what can we expect in the future?
The march of technology is in full swing. In just the last generation, we’ve experienced three major waves of technological advancement that have fundamentally transformed how we work, communicate, transact, manage information and lead organisations. These changes have also tested our ability to adapt to these new developments.
The first wave was the advent of information technology alongside the internet. The speed of information transmission and processing became instantaneous. Suddenly, we had access to all the world’s information in our pockets, and all our contacts were just a message or call away. Web1 internet, centrally created information (journalism), smoothly transitioned into Web2, where centrally held but user-generated information (social media) took off.
The next significant change came with the invention of blockchain, which is still finding its place, but has already brought a new level of security to financial transactions, challenged traditional monetary processes, and provided a new impetus for development in both technology and financial sectors. This laid the foundation for Web3, which involves the creation and management of decentralised information (like decentralised social media and content management).
Now it’s artificial intelligence’s (AI) turn. Since the advent of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, AI development has proceeded at a staggering pace. Initially, we thought AI would first take over simpler and more routine human tasks like production lines, warehouse work, cleaning, etc. However, reality shows that AI, even in its early stages, is capable of taking on much more creative roles like copywriting, art, software development, customer support, and more. Cleaning, household jobs, production, and logistics are still to come, as developing the necessary hardware modules takes more time than software creation.
Today, it is possible to assemble an entire company team using AI tools. We can “hire” ChatGPT or AlphaCode for software development, create marketing materials, videos, images, and produce social media content using tools like DALL-E, Synthesia, Designs, and Rephrase. Air.ai is an excellent sales assistant making sales calls to customers, while Chatlab handles customer support.
According to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, we are currently in the first phase of AI development, dominated by simpler language model-based chat interfaces. We are already moving into the second phase, where AI will independently search the internet for information and solve more complex problems on its own. In the third phase, autonomous AI agents will emerge, each with specific roles, tasks, and responsibilities. These agents will exchange information, correct mistakes, solve problems, and work for days without human intervention. In the fourth phase, these agents will learn to perform their tasks more efficiently, focusing on innovation, development, and learning. The fifth phase will bring fully autonomous AI organisations responsible for specific fields, consisting of dedicated agents.
Following this fascinating trend inevitably raises the question: what will happen to people and our jobs?
There are many predictions and hypotheses. Here is one direction in which we seem to be moving at a good pace.
The entire era of information has pushed humanity into rapid development, creating a need to adapt more quickly both collectively and individually. We are increasingly facing challenges such as an overloaded brain, information overload, resulting stress and depression, addiction disorders, and various other mental health issues. The statistics speak for themselves. According to the research conducted by EU Parliament (2022), more than 27% of the working class suffers from stress, depression and anxiety. Mental health issues have increased after Covid time by 25%. Those numbers are way higher in the younger generation. Simultaneously, almost half of the younger generation doesn’t have access to mental health support. Another worrying fact is that in 2016, 1 in 6 people had mental health issues. In 2022, 1 in 2 people had mental health issues.
The march of technology further accelerates this trend, as the speed of information production and processing thanks to AI grows exponentially even more.
With the aggressive advent of AI, many more people will experience stress and depression due to job loss, confusion, inability to adapt quickly to changes, and identity crises. All these people need help and support from someone who listens, assists, supports, and guides them back on track.
This is the role that AI cannot fulfil! Although there are psychological counselling chatbots, there is still a need for a real person at some point. A real person who communicates and listens to you. This involves empathy, sympathy, heart-to-heart and soul-to-soul communication, unconditional love, understanding, reflection – a simple but inexplicable connection that AI cannot replicate.
Here, the roles and jobs that directly help and support people in their progression become more valuable. Roles like psychologists, psychotherapists, various therapists, healers, spiritual guides, coaches, caregivers, and other support functions that involve direct human contact will become increasingly important. And earlier rather than later. Naturally, quality will always be a crucial measure. All kinds of charlatans and self-proclaimed healers will be quickly weeded out as mediocre. Demand for quality rises, competition increases, and with it, the quality itself.
That raises the question, how can we measure quality?
It’s not easy in that domain. Simplest way always is to look into the outcome: what outcome is this particular person producing? Another, less known way is to trust a system which has a long history, track record and very systematic and grounded approach behind. This is called lineage.
