Growth is Not Your Natural
Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon’s first book, “You are Not Perfect the Way You Are,” does a kind of magick that until reading, I didn’t know was possible. In its relatively short, ~260, double spaced, not to mention small (!) pages, he successfully and comprehensively distills some of the more fundamental Hermetic concepts into bite-sized chapters that can be applied to your daily life.
The result?
A bound, royal blue package that I imagine to be a gift. More affordable and easier to access than most of Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon’s teachings, and yet, extremely valuable.
In Chapter 3 of You Are Not Perfect the Way You Are, Sovereign Ipsissumus Dave offers a fresh take on growth.
The first foundational understanding is that, much like the title of the chapter states, ‘you are not a tree. Growth is not your natural state.’ To me, this immediately brings to mind the adage (that in the Modern Mystery School, we reject), such as ‘people never change’. While indeed, growth is not our natural state, people CAN change, and sometimes DO change. Through my years as an initiate in the Modern Mystery School, I can confirm that I myself have changed dramatically, as have many of my comrades.
Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave outlines why growth takes so much effort in this chapter on growth. I’ll summarize here, but definitely do recommend that you get your hands on a copy of this book yourself to read not only about growth, but also about the other topics he covers in the book, such as gratitude, healing, the battle we have with the Self, discernment, and so many others.
But for now, on GROWTH.
Imagine an iPhone, but not the shiny new iPhone 17 Pro. The original model.
In 2007 at first release, its default programming was – well, fresh. Shiny. Fabulous. Clean. And yet, as the years went on, without software upgrades or the latest apps and technology, the original iPhone became completely obsolete. At best, difficult to use in the modern era, but at worst, completely nonfunctional.
Without humans applying what Sovereign Ipssisimus Dave refers to as the ‘Tree of Commitment,’ comprised of discipline and consistency (of humans!), the iPhone now would never have become what it is today.
But now, back to you. You are GOD, and yet, you are GOD working with programming and conditioning called the Lower Self. While your spiritual nature may strive to be like God, your Lower Self acts as an achor, pulling you down and reinforcing your natural state… that is, stagnation. The opposite of Growth.
And so in order to GROW, you must apply discipline and consistency to shed your programming and conditioning and express more of your own GODLINESS in this world. It’s no small feat, really. Because growth isn’t our natural state, we aren’t programmed to grow, and we typically don’t know how. We must first commit to learning and working toward whatever it is we desire to experience JOY, which comes when we express more of our godliness.
Unfortunately, commitment without action is nothing. So once you have committed to growth, you must then apply consistent action in obtaining what it is that you desire. How could you possibly grow your healing practice without first, committing to it, and second, working to share your services, grow your knowledge, and actually heal people? How could you have a beautiful relationship without committing to the person you’re in a relationship with, and then consistently showing up to cultivate the quality and experience of your relationship?
Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave discusses the negative connotations that we often have with doing anything unnatural – but homes are not natural, central heating is not natural, and neither is your iPhone! Yet these all drastically improve our quality of life. As a human, becoming unnatural, “or one might even [say] supernatural [is our desire]. Because the natural state in this universe is entropy… of tearing apart, falling down, regression, or stagnation.” Entropy is chaos. Do you want a life of chaos? Then become unnatural, by applying the commitment and discipline to become more like your Divine, God Self.
That is, your intention to change isn’t enough. You have to do something.
“As an Ipsissimus, I would ask, what have you done to hone your [supernatural] nature? What in your life are expressions that are based on your Divine Self, and not of your fears and limitations? Are you living as you desire because you have done the work to do so? Or, are you living as you can, because that is the best you believe you can do? If your live was lived as a representation of your gratitude toward God, what would be different? Are you living life, or is life living you?”
In other words, you are being asked, how well are you being trained to live your life well? Are you prepared? Because you aren’t entitled to living a Joyful life. You have to make yourself worthy… by committing, and applying discipline, and consistency, and working diligently toward the life that you dream of for yourself. It won’t come to you.
It is now that I feel inclined to remind you that you are God. That is, YOU are capable of great things, most especially the life you desire. You must only commit to yourself. Because you are a being of great power, and you CAN do it.
Plus, wouldn’t that be the greatest act of Love toward yourself, God, to commit to becoming yourself, and expressing your Divine nature?
