The 9 Trials of the Negative Ego!
What is that monster in the corner?
‘Oh! It’s in me, in my mind, something hanging in the shadows of my very own mind!’
The biggest monsters you need to really be aware of are … right in the recesses of your mind, in the shadows where you fear to look.
What happens when you ‘put the lights on’? Ahhhhhh, clarity, choice, the ability to say no to that which tries to control you.
Did you know that The Empower Thyself Class & Initiation is the first step on the Path, and the journey of the Adept Initiate is the about elimination of the negative ego? This gives empowerment right back into your own hands – the very aspect inside of you that wants to keep the lights off?!

In the journey of initiation, many initiates find along their journey that self-mastery is not simply an aspiration—it is a requirement. As students in the Mystery School tradition, or even simply as an individual striving to live in integrity, we are called to confront the negative ego in all its forms. This ongoing battle is not merely psychological; it is deeply spiritual. To truly earn the title of being an ‘Adept i’nitiate, one must learn to face and overcome the nine trials of the negative ego.
Recently, I had the privilege of attending The 9 Trials of the Ego, a class taught by Aleks Ceho—astrologer, martial artist, and master teacher within the lineage of the Modern Mystery School. What unfolded was not only a deep transmission of wisdom, but also an energetic clearing that catalysed real inner transformation.
The premise is deceptively simple: like Hercules battling the nine-headed Hydra, we are each called to face nine manifestations of the ego. These are not random emotional flares or circumstantial shadows, but archetypal challenges that test our alignment on the physical, emotional, and mental planes. The trials are grouped according to the elements—earth, water, and air—and each group is governed by a particular astrological sign. Crucially, each trial requires a specific key to unlock resolution. Addressing one without recognising the true root only leads to more confusion, as the negative ego is a master of disguise.
This is where the depth of Esoteric Astrology comes in. Unlike popular astrology, which is (arguably too) often reduced to entertainment or generic personality traits, the astrological wisdom shared by Aleks is deeply initiatory. It offers initiates clarity on where they stand in their spiritual evolution, and insight into how the energies of the zodiac shape the ego’s trials. This knowledge is not available through books or casual study; it is earned through dedication and hard work at understanding oneself. It is knowledge that serves an individual’s progression.
Throughout the day, the class was infused with an unmistakable energy of clearing and revelation. I experienced the kind of release I’ve longed for—issues that had lingered for years began to dissolve. It was a testament to the power of Mystery School teachings when delivered by someone who has embodied them through personal discipline and service.
As Aleks reminded us, the battle between the spirit and the negative ego begins at initiation. We cycle through Scorpio’s shadow work and Sagittarius’ higher truth, again and again, until we arrive at Capricorn’s mastery. Only then can we serve fully in Aquarius, and allow the Christ within to express outwardly in Pisces. This esoteric journey mirrors the path walked by Hercules—and ultimately, by all who choose to rise.
We rise by kneeling. We conquer by surrendering. We gain by letting go. In facing our own nine-headed Hydra, we come to know not just our weaknesses, but our divine strength.
In truth, we are all Hercules.

Traditionally, this day is known as Litha, a time to honour and respect the Sun. Litha is a celebration of the Earth’s coming abundance and the power of the divine Father, the Sun.
