Re-Remembering Joy: Lessons from Hermetics with Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon
Taking a class with Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon is never just “taking a class.”Often, it is only in hindsight that you realize the depth of the teachings you’ve received. Many times, I’ve sat in a classroom thinking the material seemed familiar – almost like I already knew it. That, of course, is part of the Hermetic journey: re-remembering what is already within us.
Quite early on, I learned the importance of approaching each class with an “empty cup.” I do my best to practice this, but in truth, it’s something I’ve struggled with. I often run into complications when I catch myself thinking, I already know this. That attitude… thinking I know it all… has actually been one of my greatest blocks in receiving.
Coming to Hermetic classes with an empty cup is essential, because we truly have no idea what is happening in our energetic structure, let alone in the material we receive verbally from Sovereign. The keys may not land immediately, but when they do, they transform not only our understanding but the very way we live and the capacity in which we’re able to live.
The Hermetic Joy class itself was extraordinary: we laughed, giggled, and shared an incredible atmosphere. Yet afterwards, I felt like something was missing. I wondered, “Did I really receive anything from this class?”. That question lingered, and at first, it left me feeling as though my cup hadn’t been filled.
But then, life revealed the teachings and may keys unlocked in an unexpected way. After the Kabbalah Ascension, I traveled with fellow Ritual Masters to Glastonbury. While there, I encountered a man who radiated a presence I assumed must come from spiritual initiation. To my surprise, he told me he wasn’t part of any lineage or group – he simply lived in joy.
That moment struck me deeply. It bruised my ego, yes, but it also illuminated what was missing in my own life: Joy. And the question I had been asking myself “What did I really receive from the Hermetic Joy class?” was finally unlocked, and I was ready to dive in and unpack the keys. From there, the seeds planted in the Hermetic Joy class began to grow.
What was also illuminated was that I had been unable to truly receive the keys. By blocking them, I had denied myself from receiving. As a sovereign being, I had a choice and I chose, in that moment of sitting in the class, to listen to my negative ego rather than allowing myself to truly receive and be open to the possibilities of learning something new.
But after the class, I realized joy isn’t something external to chase – it must be cultivated within and then allowed to expand outwards. This realization shifted everything. I began reconnecting with simple pleasures I had denied myself: dancing, indulging in good food, listening to music, even dancing in the rain. These weren’t distractions from the path: they were part of embodying Hermetic principles and living in alignment with joy.
The true magick of Sovereign’s teachings often lies beneath the surface. It is possible to leave a class thinking we didn’t receive much, or perhaps not fully understanding what just happened. With the sheer amount of light that flows through these teachings, it’s no surprise. Yet that very doubt is often the doorway to deeper transformation. With Hermetic Joy, the keys unlocked slowly, but once they landed, they opened profound understanding not only of Hermetics, but of how to live fully alive.
Joy, I discovered, is magnetic. It raises vibration, both personally and collectively. It reminds us that life is not just about mission and discipline but also about activating the inner child, chasing dreams, and experiencing the beauty of being alive.
Today, I live with a level of joy I couldn’t have imagined before. It has reshaped my life into something vibrant, abundant, and deeply aligned. And for this, I am profoundly grateful.
If you ever have the chance to take Hermetic Joy with Sovereign, I highly recommend it. Like all his classes, it continues to unravel in daily life long after the classroom doors close.

When I attended How to Live a Hermetic Life in 2023, I was looking for the key to organizing my life. After 7 years of study as an Adept Initiate, I had experienced immense growth. It was almost like I was manifesting a garden that was overrun, and I needed to figure out where to prune it – and how, too. I felt like this class would supplement my previous training, to be a source of cohesion for all of the experience and information I had received thus far. I was already on the path of the Healer and the Ritual Master when How to Live a Hermetic Life was first offered. I was already feeling and following that inner desire to be better in my service to others and to myself.I wanted a system in place to help me understand the boundaries of where I should cut back and where I should push myself or allow myself to expand. What are the ways that I could support this desire to serve and continue to grow? To me, Hermetics is a very efficient system. It may not be clear in the traditional sense; it is not always easy to understand or explain. But the energy behind what is being taught feels very solid and – again – organized. As though there is an invisible kingdom where everything has a path and its place. You might not always be able to see it, but when you bump up against it you can tell. I wanted to deepen my connection with that system and the clarity of it, so I could let go of any systems I had built that were blocking me from being in the flow of Light. My key takeaway from the teachings itself is that the most humble servant in the lineage is the Ipsissimus. Founder Gudni is a Sovereign Ipsissimus, as are our Ritual Master Teachers Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon and Sovereign Ipsissimus Hideto Nakagome. During the same program that I attended this class, we had just witnessed the momentous initiation of 7 neophyte Ipsissima as well. The wisdom imparted in How to Live a Hermetic Life resulted in a series of very touching moments of understanding, recognition, and deep gratitude for the sacrifices that my Teachers have made in their service to not only us, but for humanity as a whole. I received profound insights into how the energy flows from Teacher to Student, from Adept Initiate to Ipsissimus, vice versa, and every initiation in between. I am looking forward to my next opportunity to audit this class so that I may deepen my awareness of the teachings and remember even more of the nuggets of wisdom that are being offered.
